TW: death, murder, gun violence, police brutality, racism

Grief across the United States is high as families, particularly families of color, and more specifically black families, are experiencing a global health crisis and violence from the state against their personhood simultaneously. Media outlets continue to share and amplify stories of loss and devastation, and while these stories deserve attention, one could argue that the lens through which the information is shared causes further trauma and devastation to historically oppressed communities while simultaneously failing to create meaningful change or identifying means of supporting the communities they exploit for headlines, viewers, and advertising dollars.

I am writing as Daunte Wright’s story is gaining increasing national attention, calling to the forefront, yet again, the need to organize and demand police abolition as state violence and white supremacy are responsible for another unnecessary murder of a black man in the United States.

Daunte’s story sits squarely in the backdrop of Minneapolis, the place of George Floyd’s murder, and the current location of Derek Chauvin’s trial. Devastatingly, Daunte’s story is not unique. Daunte is one of over 260 people who have been murdered by the police in the United States in 2021, according to the ACLU.

I felt it important to comment on what is happening because silence is both violence and complicity, but I know that my voice should not be central to the conversation. For that reason, I would like to recommend that you explore the thoughts and ideas of the following people relative to this topic, as well as others:

If you would like to join me in providing financial resources for Daunte and his family, or organizations supporting the Minneapolis community, I recommend the following:

For supporting Daunte’s family directly:
